What's Happening

The Tranzac Club on Brunswick, just south of Bloor, has a jam-packed schedule, including the free-of-charge Jamzac's Open Acoustic Jam in the Southern Cross Lounge at 3 pm on Saturday.

Kaolin Designs on Dupont St (west of Bathurst) is having its Annual Canada Day Sale from Tues July 1 to Sun July 6. Prices for Patricia O'Brien's pottery will be reduced by 25 % and there'll be great deals on William Roddy's furniture, as well as tin toys, artist jigsaw puzzles and clocks.

The Black Angels and The Warlocks play Lee's Palace tonight. Tickets are $11.50.

The Bloor Cinema has an 11:30 pm screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show Friday night. Does that ever bring back memories....

At The Central in Mirvish Village, pop singer Karen Kosowski takes the stage Friday at 9:30 pm.
Once in awhile I remind you about 1,001 Friday Nights of Storytelling. It's a bit further afield (Innis College Cafe at Sussex and St. George), but close enough to merit mention. Howard Kaplan is scheduled to host this Friday. It runs from 8 pm to 10:30 pm and the suggested donation is $5.

Next Thursay, July 3rd Bill Gladstone will be at the MilesNadalJCC presenting Jewish Toronto: Sunshine on Spadina. The cost is $2 (free for people 55+ and members).

Whatever you do, enjoy it!

Tollkeeper's Cottage reopening July 1

Just beyond the northern edge of our neighbourhood, at the northwest corner of Davenport & Bathurst, lies Canada's oldest tollhouse, The Tollkeeper's Cottage. Dating from 1835, it is an interesting piece of Hogtown history. Here's the nutshell version from the website:

"Back in the 1800's in what was then known as Upper Canada, private companies were contracted to build, improve and maintain roads, in return for which they were permitted to collect tolls from the roads' users. (Some things never change!)

One of those tollgates, the oldest such structure surviving anywhere in Canada, was recently rediscovered after more than a century and a half of various moves and transformations, serving as part of a residence not far from its original location at the corner of Davenport Road and Bathurst Street in Toronto."

Since being rediscovered in 1993, the Tollkeeper's Cottage has undergone an extensive renovation.
The official opening is planned for Canada Day, July 1, at 2 pm, rain or shine.

Cheers,
Vanessa
