For all the commitment-phobic, undisciplined procrastinators out there, you must check out this site, StickK, which was the creation of a handful of economists from MIT and Yale. They are proposing an incentive/motivation program based on their academic research into human behaviour. Basically, they are saying people need incentives and motivation to affect serious change in their lives. Do you want to quit smoking, loose twenty pounds, run a marathon, etc.? By using this site, you can set your goals and make the stakes extremely high for missing your mark. They've set up contract templates for you to create your goals. They also suggest ideas for failing; such as, giving to an Anti-Charity, an organization that works against your personal, philosophical principles. This Anti-Charity will receive money on your behalf if you fail. Their site includes some funny anecdotes about their personal experiments with contracts that eventually became StickK.
Does this mean that a pre-nup makes a marriage last longer; I'll bet these economists have the answer.
