Caribbean Roti Palace

I was coming to the Annex long before I lived here, as is the case with most native Torontonians. I went to the Bloor Cinema, I attended a few of Reg Hartt's movie nights at various locations, I bought a lot of household essentials for my first apartment at Honest Ed's and I even went to Lee's Palace once or twice.

But the reason that I came to the area the most prior to living here was for the fabulous roti at Carribean Roti Palace, which is south of Bloor at 744 Bathurst. In India, roti refers to a flatbread, but in the Carribean, it's curried meat (and veg) wrapped in a flatbread and that's the roti that I'm BLOGging about here.

Like a lot of roti restaurants in T.O., Carribean Roti Palace is low on atmosphere -- picture orange plastic trays and plastic cutlery -- but the food? My, my, my! It's the food that makes this place a "hidden gem." This is a fabulous place to get a quick takeaway meal.

I notice that a lot of people order veg-friendly doubles, which are a fried dough and spiced chickpea sandwich, but I have yet to try them.

The rotis, of which I've had plenty, come filled with chicken, boneless chicken, beef or goat and if you like heat, you can add hot sauce. To me, it's plenty hot without the added spice, but I'm not your bold, suicide wings kind of eater.

A roti will run you about $7, but it's massive and could easily be split among two people, especially if you add a side dish.

Cheers,
Vanessa
