UPDATE: Off Leash Dog Area/s in the Annex

As most of us know, as of Jan 1, Jean Sibelius Square is no longer an option for off-leash dog exercise. As a result of this action by the City, a Dogs Off-Leash Working Group was created to look for alternative space in the neighbourhood for dogs and their owners. This Tuesday, June 10, there will be a community meeting at Royal St. George's College, Ketchum Hall, to discuss the creation of Off Leash Areas in St. Alban's Square (at Barton between Howland and Albany) and in the Huron Street Playground (Southeast corner of Lowther and Huron). On Tuesday, the Off-Leash Working Group will be looking for community feedback on these proposed sites.

If you are a neighbour of Huron Street Park and would like to "make a statement" about your park, a petition was sent to AnnexNation asking for signatures to block any proposed off-leash area there.

As well, Louise and Fred, lmorin0011@sympatico.ca, on Albany are organizing a group to support efforts to keep St. Alban's Square a "leashed" park.

If you are a dog owner and would like to talk to other Annex Dog Owners, check in with Gillian Morton, head of ADO, Annex Dog Owners.

Also, the Off-Leash Working Group is available via e-mail, offleashworkinggroup@gmail.com, to answer questions or concerns of all neighbours regarding the proposed changes and the upcoming community meeting.

Finally, there has been some confusion regarding the appeal of the Jean Sibelius Square decision brought to the City by Annex Dog Owners. Councillor Adam Vaughan offered the following explanation:

Dog Owners have appealed for an explanation of the ruling on Sibelius. The detailed response that is comtemplated has not yet been written or delivered to those appealing for an explanation. Staff still believes that this process is confused by the name that has been given to it. It is not an appeal in the judicial sense, rather it is an appeal for more detailed information regarding a decision of the General Mgr.
In conclusion, it is my understanding that the original decision, that the park was not properly configured to accomodate leash-free activity as spoken to in the new policy, is sound. Further, an application to change the design or alter re-build of the park now underway is not permited now that outside staff have been contracted to execute a design brief.
