Hello all,
I just wanted to write a final post to say that I'm missing AnnexNation. I love our community and I liked that this BLOG pulled our ties a little bit closer and made our bustling, thriving downtown community a wee bit cozier.
But I'm happy to say that I will be continuing in the community-building vein by writing a monthly events column for The Annex Gleaner.
So if you want to continue sending along info about your local events and activities, please email them to me at annexevents@gmail.com, but bear in mind that publishing won't be as immediate as it was on the BLOG.
I look forward to hearing from everyone and staying in touch!

One year and many posts later, I've decided to end the run of this neighbourhood site. There are just too many demands on my time and it is much more difficult to run this thing on my own. It has been great fun this year and thanks for all the comments and feedback.

Looking at another beautiful fall weekend around the corner and some notes on things to keep you busy:

By daylight, check out Palmerston Community Daycare's Annual FallFest at Palmerston School in Seaton Village on Saturday, September 27, from 11am-3pm. The music is always excellent at this event and there are lots of activities for the kiddos.

Also, on Saturday morning beginning at 9am the Howland Avenue Street Sale takes over the block of Howland Avenue just south of Dupont. There is always a crowd and great deals to boot.

This Sunday, from 11am-6pm at Queen's Park look for Word on the Street, Toronto's yearly gathering of books and the people who read them.

By night, check out the Abilities Art Festival at the Miles Nadal JCC on Saturday evening from 6-10pm, Tickets: $9/7 1-888-844-9991x2 www.abilitiesartsfestival.org. At the Bloor Cinema this Friday and Saturday night look for the Student Shorts Film Festival. Bonus, students are free.

Farmers Market Today

Just a reminder that today is the Farmers' Market in the parking lot that sits south of Bloor between Borden and Lippincott. I had a chat with the local organizer of the Market since I had heard rumblings that the farmers would not sell produce before 3pm even if they were set up to do so. His explanation had to do with fairness and likened it to showing up early to a garage sale. We all know how annoying the "earlybirds" can be. He also noted that the 4hour time frame, 3-7pm was fixed and that aspect was out of his control. The crowds are encouraging and organizers are hoping to double the number of buyers by next year. If you are interested in volunteering, they are very much in need of help; look for the white tent along Borden next time you are at the market for more information. The Market runs through the end of October.

Bishop Allen Academy-Seaton Village

Looks like we have a new high school in the neighbourhood; Bishop Allen Academy on Markham south of Barton. For those of you with grade six students, note that they are a grade 7-12 Catholic high school with options for French Immersion. Nice to see activity in that long abandoned building.

Fire at Bedford and Bernard

About 150 people in the immediate neighbourhood were forced to flee today when fire broke out in a house on a street near the intersection of Davenport Rd. and Avenue Rd.

The fire engulfed an early 20th century home on Bedford Rd. at Bernard Ave. around 1 o'clock this afternoon.

The house was being renovated. About half an hour after the fire began the home's roof fell in.

Police say there have been no injuries.

There is much to keep us busy this September weekend.

By daylight, check out the Small World Music Festival which holds music performances at venues across the City. From 10am-12noon on Saturday, Sept 20th there will be a performance by Mr. Something, Something using their bicycle-powered music system at The Brickworks in support of Evergreen which happens to be run by an Annex neighbour. In addtion there are events all day as part of Evergreen's Conservation and Sustainability Fair.

Also on Saturday, the Annex Residents Association hosts its Annual Fall Book and Bake Sale at 250 Davenport from 11-4pm.

If you are looking for a day trip out of the neighbourhood, check out the 52nd Annual Pioneer Festival being held this Saturday at Black Creek Pioneer Village. The quilt auction is at 12noon.

By night, check out more music in conjunction with the Small World Music Festival. At Lee's Palace Rebel Rhythm will be performing at 8pm. Also, at the Miles Nadal JCC on Sunday the 21st at 8pm, David Buchbinders ODESSA/HAVANA with Daddo and Marylyn Lerner will be performing in the Al Green Theatre.

The Hoa Hoas

While at Central Tech the other day, I spoke with one of the supply teachers. In the course of conversation, I learned about a local band, The Hoa Hoas. While most of the group is from Kennsington, I think the Annex appreciates good music and is always interested in supporting local musicians. Take a listen and if you like what you hear, they will be playing nearby at The Velvet Underground with the Spoons on September 25th.

Scottish Country Dancing

Annex neighbour, Moira Korus, has been teaching Scottish Country Dancing in Toronto for as long as I have know her. If you have a son or daughter with energy and a free Saturday morning, I would highly recommend Moira's program, Rosedale Scottish Country Dancers. The link will take you to this year's teaching schedule and note, the cost is quite reasonable. Moira is also a great source for information on adult Scottish Country Dance classes and formal dances that happen in the City. Classes are held at the Rosedale Presbyterian Church; a reasonable cycling distance away. When asked about holding classes in the Annex, Moira commented that it was just too difficult to find available space.

Update Jean Sibelius Square

As many of you know, Jean Sibelius Square, north of Wells between Brunswick and Kendal, is undergoing a makeover in the upcoming year. As part of the design process, there will be a community meeting in October. This will give the community a second chance to weigh in on the design which has evolved from three concept designs that were presented at a previous community meeting in June. Once a final date has been set for the community meeting, I will post it here. It is important to attend this community meeting if you want to voice your preferences in terms of park design. The goal is to break ground in Spring 2009.

Loop Gallery

Back in the spring, I posted information about a local artist, Lanny Shereck, who creates large images using photo collage and oil/acrylic. My favourite pieces are taken right from the streets of Toronto. Additionally, there are some striking works based on the streets of Havanna. Right now at Loop Gallery, Queen and Gladstone, Lanny's work is on display until September 21st in a joint show, OVERLAP, with artist/printmaker Rochelle Rubinstein.

I have had more than a few people ask me about Vanessa's departure from ANNEXNATION, wondering if the blog would continue and if everything between us is OK. Vanessa had spoken to me on a few occasions about trying to turn a profit with the blog. We explored options, but found that it is truly a volunteer effort that turns out these daily posts. In the end, Vanessa has decided to focus on "greener" pastures. I will keep the blog going as much as possible. Feel free to send your contributions; tips on restaurants, garage sales, cottages for rent and any neighbourhood concerns.

I just plain liked the shape of this... it's part of a fence on Wells Street.

I think that it's slightly rundown state adds to its feeling of age and timeless charm.
I also like the silver/gray against the deep summer green of the lawn.

The Bloor Cinema screens the well-reviewed kiddy flick Wall-E several times during the week, as well as Soul Masters: Dr. Guo and Dr. Sha. The latter is a documentary about a Chinese doctor and "the revolutionary discovery" that "everything has a soul, and the soul can heal."

The Annex Wreck Room at Bathurst and Bloor is kicking off IndieCan Wednesdays on the 17th with bands Sidhara, Painted Birds and The Febryarys.

The Tranzac features The Jessica Stuart Few Tuesday at 7:30 pm ($5 or PWYC), along with many other acts throughout the week.

ROMwalks does a little navel gazing and leads a walk around the ROM and its Neighbours on Sunday. The free walk starts at 2 pm and participants meet on the steps of the museum.

Clinton's hosts Freehand Books party as it celebrates its first year in print on Wednesday. There will be readings by authors Marina Endicott, Saleema Nawaz, Susan Olding and Jeanette Lyons and things get underway at 7:30 pm.

Speaking of Elections...

We have our own national election looming October 14th and The Star has put together an interesting snapshot of our federal riding, Trinity-Spadina, complete with recent voting history.
It includes this little tidbit... "Long described as the city's most diverse, comprising Kensington Market, Chinatown, the Annex, the waterfront condos and the islands, the riding has seen gentrification change its makeup."
True, I suppose.
According to the official website, only incumbent NDP Olivia Chow and former riding MP, Liberal Tony Ianno, are vying for the seat. But a Maclean's BLOG posting says that Ianno's wife, Christine Innes, will be facing Chow.

Vandalism on Howland

There have been several acts of vandalism on vehicles parked on Howland Avenue over the past several weeks, break-ins, keying and some hammer to windshield action; keep an eye on your vehicle and your friends too! Don't forget to take your valuables, or what might appear to be a valuable item, in with you. Our neighbour and friend left a first generation Ipod on the dash and returned to find his window smashed; something he didn't find valuable, someone else was willing to break a window to snag.

Urban Farming Lecture and Fundraiser Sept. 17

It all goes in circles.
When I was a kid, we used to hang our clothes out to dry in the backyard and grow a lot of veggies in what little space we had. So did everyone else.
Thirty years later, I still hang my clothes out to dry and I'd grow some veggies if I had ANY sun in my garden.
But, in the three decades in between, the idea of using a clothesline has gone from OK, to declasse, to ecologically aware and growing your own veg has gone from a yummy neccessity, to something not to be bothered with to an up-and-coming green "trend."
Just wait long enough and everything comes back in style...
I was reminded about all this when I read about the second annual lecture and dinner, From The Ground Up, about the Urban Farming Revolution that's being held at the Gardiner Museum September 17th.
The event features the "opportunity to hear the secrets to success from Canada’s urban farming experts.
"Keynote speaker Michael Ableman – farmer, esteemed author and photographer – will share his experiences and insights into urban agriculture. A panel discussion will follow, featuring culinary historian Elizabeth Driver, architect Stephen Teeple, and Debbie Field, executive director of FoodShare and moderated by Lori Stahlbrand, president of Local Food Plus. The panel will provide their perspectives on growing food in Toronto."
All to be followed by Jamie Kennedy at the Gardiner offering up a dinner celebrating the freshness and flavour of locally produced food and wine.
Tickets are $350 and include the talk, dinner, wine and a copy of The Science of Good Food: The Ultimate Reference on How Cooking Works.

It still feels a little slow around town... maybe because we finally got hot August weather? But there's a few things to amuse yourself with in the 'hood this week. No doubt everyone will shake off their summer stupor by next week and things'll be hopping again.

The TRANZAC has a full line up, including The Woodchoppers Association and The Friends of Fiddlers Green on Sunday.

The Bloor Cinema screens everything this week from Casablanca to the new Indiana Jones movie to Daryl's Hard Liquor and Porn Festival.
Talk about variety...Tuesday is Varsity Day. Students get in for $4 per show (with ID) to see the new Brideshead Revisited, the classic The Maltese Falcon and Canadian Indie hit Young People Fucking.

The New Deal plays Lee's Palace September 6. Tickets are $20.

The Annex Residents' Association meets Wed. Sept. 10th at 7:30 pm at The Annex Retirement Residence, 123 Spadina Road.

Swiss Chalet & Sobey's

I meant to BLOG about the Swiss Chalet at Bloor and Bathurst closing awhile ago... it never was even close to being full, but the space was massive and there always was at least a few customers in it.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed a sign in a smaller space on the north side of Bloor, just west of Spadina announcing a new Swiss Chalet Express opening.

So neighbourhood devotees of the chicken that "never touches a frying pan" should be happy.

Also, Sobey's on the south side of Bloor, just east of Borden, opened a little while ago. A friend who popped in said the space is smallish, compared to our local Dominion or Loblaw's, and that the emphasis seems to be on prepared foods.

Perhaps trolling for the busy working famililes/busy student crowd?

Hart House Food and Music

There's many reasons why I enjoy living near U of T. My friend also works there and I met her for lunch one day at Sammy's Student Exchange in Hart House.

Sammy's is cafeteria-style, but the food is good and reasonably priced, plus who can beat the ambience of Hart House, nestled in its beautiful setting in Hart House Circle and a hop and a skip from stunning King's College Circle?

My friend also told me that throughout the school year, the Arbor Room at at Sammy's offers free live music shows every Thursday and Friday.

Fall Activities For Kids

It's that time of year... there's a few blushing leaves about, the kids are off to school Tuesday, the evenings start earlier and earlier.
Time to switch from "summer mode" to "busy mode" again.

It's also time to sign the niblets up for extra curricular activities. If you have a budding twinkle toes on your hands, you might want to check out the classes at The Annex Dance Academy on Bathurst or at the Randolph Academy further south.

Artistes might be interested in Nusa's classes at the Annex Art Centre on Bathurst, or Marks of Perception classes in Seaton Village with Deb Wiles.

Of course, St. Alban's Boys & Girls Club offers a slew of stuff to do during its After 4 Program and the MNJCC, too.

The city of Toronto operates programs at the Bob Abate community centre at Christie and Bloor, including swimming lessons. Sign ups start September 10th.

Books, Baked Goods and Help Needed For ARA

The Annex Residents' Association Fall Book and Bake Sale is set for Saturday, September 20 from 11 am to 4 pm at 250 Davenport Road, just west of Avenue Road.

And we quote: "... we need your HELP and your USED BOOKS - academic, novels, mysteries, science fiction, travel, art, biographies, cooking, gardening, CDs and gently used children's books.

If you have books, or can help us with the pick-ups, and/or sorting books, please call the ARA Hotline at 416-926-9261 or 416-922-3214."

The group also needs contributions of baked goods, of course, and sorting help is required on Monday and Wednesday evenings, including Sept. 3, 10, 17 and Mon. Sept. 8 and 15 at 250 Davenport, in the Basement Common Room.

Absentee Ballots for US citizens in Canada

In case you hadn't heard, there is a US federal election just around the corner; early November. After watching coverage of McCain's VP choice, Gov. Palin from Alaska, think Pat Buchanan with an up-do and a semi-automatic rifle under her arm, I thought it a good idea to remind those US citizens living in Canada to begin the process for filing an absentee ballot. Please encourage those you know who have voting privileges in the US to VOTE!

I'm featuring a guest photographer this week for Eye Candy Friday...

My sister, Jennifer, spent three weeks on the magical Bruce Peninsula in August.

I have yet to visit this national treasure, which is only three hours away, but is unique enough to have been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, along with the entire Niagara Escarpment.

It was a favourite haunt of my father's and I intend to get there sometime soon.... but I've been saying that for three years now! You know how it is...
Anyway, most of you will know that the west side of the Bruce Peninsula borders Lake Huron and features the shallow-water, sandy beaches of Sauble Beach.

This shot, however, was taken on the eastern, Georgian Bay side. That side features chilly but stunning aqua water.

Too Busy To Pick Your Fruit Trees?

I've seen some yards littered with fruit dropped from trees.... a boon to squirrels and bees, but messy for owners and their neighbours, not to mention wasteful of yummy, fresh food.

No doubt some people are too busy or too infirm to keep up with their front yard bounty.

A friend just told me about a group that will arrange to pick your fruit for free, not far from the tree.

Here's the scoop:

"not far from the tree ensures that Toronto’s fruit doesn’t go to waste. When fruit tree owners can’t harvest their bounty, we dispatch teams of volunteers to harvest it for them. One third goes to the fruit tree owners, another third goes to the volunteers for their labour, and the final third is distributed (by bicycle or cart) to community organizations in the neighbourhood who can make good use of the fresh fruit."

What a brilliant idea! And timely, with most trees just now starting to become laden with their delicious offerings.

Varsity Blues football

Last week I was walking past Varsity Centre (no longer just a stadium!) about four times a day and saw the lads in blue practising football.

DS is a fan of the ole pigskin, so I may take him to a Varsity Blues game or two. It's within walking/biking distance, tickets are $10 and $5 and the stands are close enough to the action to actually feel like you're at a game, unlike some bigger venues where I always feel that I watched the whole thing on TV.
The season kicks off September 1.

Wild Thing Cafe

We were recently sent a rave review by an Annex neighbour about a new cafe at Borden and Harbord called WILD THING CAFE. She suggested that for an extra five minute walk, skipping the intersection of Albany and Bloor, you can enjoy some amazing java and "insanely good gelato" while supporting local business owners. One of the local owners is also founder of SUNFLOWER KITCHEN; think pesto and hummus. Seems this place is getting its share of positive attention on Toronto blogs as well. Definitely on my list of places to check out.

Bike Shop News

I was going to BLOG about Curbside Cycle (412 Bloor W) renting bikes, which I think is a great idea.
So I checked out the BLOG, which has no info about rentals, and discovered another bit of interesting news... Curbside will no longer service bikes not sold by them. Guess that explains the REPAIR SHOP FULL sign disappearing of late.
The company has made the decision for some interesting reasons, one of which is this: "When there are too many city cyclists riding bikes that aren’t city bikes, the amount of repairs will always be disproportionate to the amount of mechanics.

"That," I gather, means only servicing bikes that the company believes are suitable for city biking, i.e. the ones that they sell.

But don't despair if you didn't buy your bike at Curbside! There's plenty of other places to get your bike fixed, including the recently opened Bateman' Bicycle Company on Barton that we BLOGged about in July.

As well, my husband's had great success at Dave Fix My Bike on Christie, south of Dupont.

Eye Candy Friday

I spent last weekend at a friend's cottage.
Took a breathtaking moonlit river cruise to get there, then woke up to discover a real gem of a place: a classic beauty built way back when and added to during the years.

It's original beauty was enhanced by a patina of memories from summers spent enjoying its stunning setting so that all of its wear seemed to come from joyous use as opposed to benign neglect.

The decor was made up of items contributed from people's homes through the years ... old magazines, antique plates and games adorned the hand-built shelves.

It dripped real charm, the kind that designers try to emulate to evoke feelings of nostalgia and a sense of history.

It's the kind of place that is priceless, as opposed to a multi-million Muskoka monstrosity.

You could really relax and you didn't have to worry about marring the floor, or getting the couch wet and it wasn't until we were home that I even registered that it didn't have a TV.

A little slice of heaven...

The Annex Wreck Room at Bathurst and Bloor hosts the Governor's Bash Metal/Comedy Showcase Saturday night featuring lots of metal music.
$12 will get in you in to Lee's Palace tomorrow to see Montreal duo Handsome Furs.

The Bloor Cinema features some interesting older movies in the next week as far-ranging as Batman: The Movie from 1966 to a new 35mm print of Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows on Tuesday. Time Magazine said the latter "defined the French New Wave for the world."

Only singletons from 21 to 39 are welcome to attend Fastlife's Annual Little White Lie event at Lobby on Bloor, west of Avenue Road.
"Themed around the Little White Lies we all tell, [the party] boasts fabulous draw prizes, cheeky lying games, Lady Lie (our human lie detector – dishing out penalty shots upon lie detection) and so much more."
Participants wear -- what else? -- white. Things get underway at 8 pm and tickets are $25.

This Friday from 6 to 8 pm, attend the Open Clay Studio at the Gardiner Museum on Queen's Park Circle to try your hand at working with clay. Sunday from 1 pm to 3 pm is available, too --just get there 30 minutes prior to buy your $10 ticket.

The Bloor Cinema on Bloor just east of Bathurst is one of the screening sites for the Filmi South Asian Film Festival. Tonight at 9:30 pm is the North American premiere of When Kiran Met Karen.
And Sex And The City screens at various times Saturday through Tuesday... excuse for a night out?

Brooklyn band Oneida plays Lee's Palace Friday at 7:30 pm. Tickets are only $8.50.

The Art Bar Poetry series at Clinton's features a special theme night on Tuesday: Poetry & Blues.
"Hostess Cynthia Gould leads an eclectic lineup of poets & musicians in an exploration of the bluesy side of poetry and the poetic essence of blues lyrics."
As always, things get underway at 8 pm and voluntary donations are appreciated.

It's India Weekend at the ROM featuring films and dance performances, including one that "is a unique and refreshing new take on the much-loved sport of cricket. It pushes the boundaries of contemporary bharatanatyam in an exciting display of dance, sport and popular culture."
Sounds intriguing!

Christie Pits Park Summer Celebration

Unfortunately I'm not in town this weekend, so I'll have to miss the Christie Pits Park Summer Celebration on Sunday from 4 to 6 pm.

It sounds like a blast!

The celebration is centred around the pizza oven in the southwest area of the park, just behind the south baseball diamond.

There will be pizza, of course, cake and games for kids.

The Friends of Christie Pits flyer for the event outlines a bit of the history of the area:
"The Christie Pits neighbourhood is named after the former Christie Sand Pits, a local landmark in this area until the early 1900's. Christie Street is named after William Mellis Christie, who
co-founded the Christie & Brown Cookie Company, in downtown Toronto in 1861.
The Christie Sand Pits were rich in sand, gravel, and clay deposits - remnants of the last ice age. These deposits were excavated in the late 1800's and early 1900's, and used in the construction of many of Toronto's early roadways and public buildings.
By 1909, the Christie Sand Pits were depleted and the city turned the former quarry into Willowvale Park. However, the Christie Pits name has endured and is used in reference to the park and the surrounding neighbourhood to this day."

Learn About The Suzuki Music Program

Used Childrens' Books At Seeker's

This tasty little tidbit rolled into my inbox...
"In the basement of Seeker's Books on Bloor St. [at Borden] they have a complete kids' section now. The Doug Miller bookstore [a used childrens' book store that was on Mount Pleasant] transferred his entire inventory to Seeker's and he's got the little room at the back.

Books are gently used and more than 1/2 off cover. Best of all, they're organized alphabetically by subject and author. He's got many series books for readers from 6-16! (including the entire hard-cover Nancy Drew from the 60s and 70s.) Plus a gem of a picture book collection.

I highly recommend it over BMV or Willow, where stuff is so disorganized you can't see what there is. I encourage parents to go check it out with their kids!"

What is it about red canoes that is so compelling? Is it the contrast with the blue water, the green trees, the light-blue sky?

Well, the sky isn't light blue in this shot, but it is dramatically cloudy.

You forget how big the sky can be when you live surrounded by buildings.

I'm sure we spent several hours last week just watching clouds scud across the sky.

And at night? Wow!

This Sunday is a PS Sunday in Mirvish Village -- no cars and lots of fun. August 10th promises to "highlight the visual arts and the community artists who call Mirvish Village home."

The Spadina Public Library features a children's Laugh Out Loud Party with silly stories and games on Wednesday the 13th at 10:30 a.m.

There's an intriguing sounding show at the Tranzac, Things I Have Found And How They Got There, on Saturday at 8 pm. Tickets are $12.

I didn't know that there was an all-female Toronto Roller Derby League until I saw that The Annex WreckRoom is hosting an after-derby party Saturday. Learn something new every day!

If you feel like venturing a little further afield, head south to Spadina south of College for the Toronto Chinatown Festival Saturday and Sunday. There's no info on the website (?), but a flyer says that it runs Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm and Sunday til 6 pm.

The usual suspects hold their weekend events, of course, including the ROM and the Bata Shoe Museum.

Construction

Maybe it's because last week it was the call of the loons waking me up, but the jackhammering on Bathurst that begins at 7 am is a bit much, frankly.
And the construction around Spadina and Kendal is making negotiating the side streets a lesson in perserverance and ingenuity.
What's the old joke? Toronto has two seasons: winter and construction.
Grump.

As an addendum, you also can't cross Bathurst anywhere north of Bloor until Vermont Ave., and even that's if you're on a bike/foot and very careful. Leave yourself extra time to get where you're going today, or take an alternate route.

Birthday Party Fundraiser At Trane Studio

Our neighbour, Jordan Klapman, generously has decided to celebrate his 50th birthday with a jazz jam session at Trane Studio this Saturday with all pay-what-you-can admissions going to the Hospital For Sick Children.
Things get underway at 9 pm with Jordan, Drew Birston, Tony Quarrington and Adam David plus "many, MANY musical guests."

The Annex Residents Association (ARA) is looking for volunteers "who are willing and able to volunteer several hours over the summer and in September to help make the Annex Residents' Association Annual Book Fair a success.
This may involve such activities as picking up books from people willing to donate them, and sorting the books before the fair - then, if possible, helping on the day of the fair, which will be in late September.
This event, an Annex tradition, is an important fund raiser for the ARA, and is a fun community event. It won't happen without the help of a good bunch of volunteers."

I know that technically Christie Pits is not in the Annex, but I was encouraged to hear that a neighbourhood group has organized to "take back the park". Christie Pits has had some problems over the years with criminal activity in the park especially last summer when several incidents of swarmings were reported by park users.

As you know, we're away this week and it's very likely that we were at this spot, playing in the rapids at the bottom.

Yes, my family is the type that likes to frolic in fast, dangerous water in which you can't see what's coming at you.

Thrilling? Or foolhardy?

It was at a set of rapids like this that I once said "Let's come back with a good boat" and my sister said, "Oh, no -- a cheap, dangerous dinghy is much more fun," which is now a classic line in our family.

I'm thinking about our cottage trip that we embark on tomorrow and that made me think of this pic, which was taken near the same cottage last year.
This is a lake on Crown Land about a 20-minute hike from the cottage where we stayed.

That's DH swimming... note no cottages, no boats, nothing but placid blue and verdant green. The rocks were dotted with snapping turtle eggs and there were blown-down birch trees on the shore that you could scavenge, guilt-free, for bark to write and do art on.

What more could you want? Can't wait to go back! Ginny is going away, too, and we have scheduled some posts to go up while we're gone, but we'll be out of touch otherwise.

As part of ROMWalks, there's a free walking tour of the Annex Sunday at 2 pm. Look for the person with the blue umbrella at Lowther and Avenue Road.

Speaking of the ROM, it is the venue for Shanghai: City of the Future?, a panel discussion about "Shanghai, which in recent decades has experienced a building boom on a scale that is unprecedented in world history and has completely changed its residents’ lifestyle." It ties in with the current exhibit, Shanghai Kaleidoscope.
The panel discussion features architect Brian Andrew, philosophy professor Mark Kingwell and author Jay Pridmore and is moderated by Toronto Star architecture columnist Christopher Hume. Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.

The Annex Wreck Room at Bloor and Bathurst hosts Shattered Remains Presents Flatlined tonight. In addition to Flatlined, the hard rock acts include Three See, Brane, Silver Cade and Helcion. Things get underway at 8 pm and tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Tonight you can catch "I ain't marching anymore", an event featuring protest and folk singer Phil Ochs and Zachary Stevenson at OISE, 252 Bloor Street West. Tickets are $10 and $20 and things kick off at 8 pm.

The Tranzac club on Brunswick, south of Bloor, has its usual full sched, including The Weather Station + Muskox + Anna-Linda Siddall Saturday in the Southern Cross Lounge at 10 pm. Admission is PWYC/$5 suggested.

For all ages, the Palmerston Public Library on Palmerston just north of Bloor, features Laugh Out Loud Stories Wednesday at 10:30 am. As the name suggests, storyteller Adele Koehnke promises to tell stories that will tickle your funny bone.

The Bloor Cinema is "all about" the Rolling Stones Saturday with three $10-each screenings of Stones documentaries. Also on the sched this week is the new Indiana Jones movie, which doesn't disappoint.

The Trane Studio on Bathurst features Philadelphia's Elliott Levin Friday at 9:30 pm with The Sharron Macleod Quartet. Tickets are $15 in advance.

Just an FYI as you try to maneuver your way around the neighbourhood, it appears there is a police camera at the corner of Bathurst and Dupont. A neighbour of a friend who is a neighbour just received a ticket in the mail along with a photo of an illegal turn she made at that intersection.

As You Like It

Friends in town from NY treated us to a performance of Shakespeare's As You Like It Thursday evening. It's part of Canopy Theatre Company's 8th season of outdoor theatre.

Performances take place at Philosopher's Stage at Philosopher's Walk, just southwest of the ROM -- a lovely setting if there ever was one.

We all really enjoyed the performance, even our "tween" kids, but be warned: there are a few raunchy bits.

You can bring chairs, or a blanket if you want to sit closer to the stage, and some people brought picnic dinners. Very civilized!

The cost is reasonable, too -- less than an evening movie these days at $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students, plus PWYC Wednesdays.
The run ends August 2nd, so you'd better catch it sooner rather than later.

Contstruction on Bathurst

Construction on Bathurst has disrupted life in the Annex and Seaton Village, but those most affected by the crews, machines and clouds of dust are the small businesses along Bathurst. To help keep these great little institutions in our neighbourhood, Madeleines's Cherry Pie and Ice Cream, Grapefruit Moon, Stevens, Olives, Java Mama, etc., please make a conscious effort to visit them during and after construction which will hopefully be completed at the beginning of August. With this in mind, I walked to Steven's and bought some items that I would normally purchase at Fiesta Farms. Why not call ahead and pick up a few pies from Madeliene's for your next weekend up north? I am sure the efforts will be appreciated and thriving small businesses are a great part of what make this neighbourhood unique. Calling ahead is key since many of these businesses have had to scale back on hours because of construction issues.

Stolen Bikes Looking for Owners

It turns out that The Bicycle Clinic at 927 Queen Street West was in the news yesterday since police discovered it didn't just mend broken bikes, but stole them as well. There are 150 high-end bikes waiting to be claimed by their owners. This is where registering your bike comes in handy since it is the only way to prove ownership to the police.
As for Igor Kenk, suspected ring leader of this bike theft outfit, what punishment would fit the crime. It would not be difficult to put together a jury of Torontonians who have their bikes stolen. Speaking for myself, I have had five bikes stolen over ten years; cable locks and u-locks, one lock two lock, three lock, four lock. With four locks on my bike, I still had the back tire taken after being in Hart House for only 30min. Called campus police and they treated the event as an non event, happens everyday, don't bother reporting it. This is the sad reality of owning a bike in Toronto.

Bloor Cinema has the Summer Toronto Film Challenge results Friday at 7 pm. Admission is $12.
As well, the Toronto premiere of Stuck runs throughout the week. Starring Mena Suvari and Stephen Rea, it's billed as being firmly in the gallows humour category.

Wisconsin singer-songwriter Bon Iver is at Lee's Palace Tuesday. Tickets are $14.

Free Outdoor Reading this Saturday

Taddle Creek Magazine is hosting an outdoor reading this Saturday in Taddle Creek Park. In case you are not familiar with TCM:

Taddle Creek was founded in 1997 as a Christmas annual for the Annex, Toronto’s unofficial literary hub, and its surrounding neighbourhoods (Seaton Village, Christie-Ossington, Little Italy, Palmerston, Sussex-Ulster, Huron-Sussex, and the University of Toronto area). In 2000, the magazine expanded its area of coverage to encompass the entire city and increased its frequency to semi-annual. Two years later, Taddle Creek’s distribution network finally escaped Toronto’s borders and the magazine became available on newsstands coast-to-coast.

As the final event of Taddle Creek's tenth anniversary year, the magazine invites you to a free, somewhat impromptu, outdoor reading this Saturday, July 19th, at 3 p.m., in Taddle Creek Park. It's a lovely little park with a fifties-moderne-style fountain that is slated for "updating" soon, so while you're out and about on Saturday, why not drop by, sit on the grass, and enjoy some schmooze-free literature.

Taddle Creek Park is in the Annex, on Bedford Road, just north of Bloor Street. Bedford is one block east of St. George, and not too west of Avenue. If arriving by subway, take the Bedford exit from St. George station, walk away from Varsity Stadium, and you're almost there.

On the schedule are three authors who have read at Taddle Creek launches throughout the past decade: Hal Niedzviecki, Alexandra Leggat, and David Whitton.

Dear Residents of Ward 20:

The vote on the proposal to take down elevated portions of the Gardiner is set to happen this week. I'd like to thank the many of you who have written in with comments regarding this significant project.

At this point, what is clear is that some components of the proposal present significant benefits for the people and neighbourhoods of our Ward. Rebuilding the York Street off ramp, and freeing up city land is a good thing. Reallocating the funding for Front Street and removing it as an immediate threat is a welcome relief. But as positive as these things might be, the Front Street Extension remains on the books as part of the city's official plan, and thus remains a long term threat to the viability of the southern half of the ward. Removing the York Street turning ramp will leave a wide open green space surrounded by major roads which creates orphaned, perhaps unusable, public space.

The most difficult questions to answer focus on the eastern part of the city where the Gardiner will come down and where the plan calls for a new wider road to be built. Most of the discussion will centre on the traffic impact from the perspective of motorists commuting. Access to the waterfront is often referenced - but the kind of access is not defined. A wider sidewalk alongside a wider road provides more access, but more tunnels with smaller streets and sidewalks would also increase access.

Esthetically, traveling under a raised roadway is ugly, noisy and characterized by poor air quality. Removing the overhead expressway and creating at least double the number of at-grade lanes of traffic is just as ugly in some ways, just as noisy, and difficult to cross quickly or comfortably.

We are told that a "University Avenue style boulevard" is the model for the street that is to be created. University Avenue has only 8 lanes of traffic; two of which are used for parking for most of the day and on weekends. University is lined by buildings (on both sides) which are serviced by a network of side streets, all of which connect to the main street at signalized intersections.

Importantly, University Avenue has wide broad sidewalks, which lead from building to building, connect subway to surface transportation. University Avenue carries one-third the number of cars (at a reduced speed) that the new and old Lakeshore/Gardiner corridor must serve at higher speeds. As a result the park-like meridian in the middle is a comfortable place for area office workers to eat lunch. The new road way and its traffic island will have to function differently.

So far, I have presented the challenges that a new road design would present. But the area under consideration is as much an opportunity for a new neighbourhood and a new park system. To design and build a new road requires that the two other components be put on hold. Approaches to how other land is used in the eastern waterfront will, and in fact can only, be figured out after a decision is made on the route and configuration of the new road. This means that current environmental and urban design issues are now on hold pending a study and new proposals for transportation infrastructure.

Other waterfront councillors and the mayor, together with some notable planers in the city, have endorsed this proposal to tear down a section of the Gardiner as a necessary exercise. Their view is that if a study is not undertaken through the Environmental Assessment (EA) process a chapter will be closed and the option will disappear through re-development. They believe that issues such as what constitutes "better access" for pedestrians and concerns such as the impact on plans to naturalize the Don, can be addressed during an EA.

As you can see, this is a complex question, with multiple answers and implications. Perfect Pie?

The latest Village Post arrived on my doorstep recently containing an article awarding first place Toronto pie honours to Frangipane's giant berry tart.

A tiny-ish but elegant space at 215 Madison on the corner of Dupont, Frangipane also has been named Toronto's best patisserie by NOW magazine.

The cost of quality can be high -- the pie is $30, for instance -- but this is a good place to keep in mind when ordering a custom wedding cake, for instance.

Also, if you occasionally desire a break from a low-cal, low-fat, tasteless diet, a real pastry is much more satisfying than, say, a slice of cake made with lard icing from an in-store deli.
Don't believe me about the lard icing? What DID you think was in that hot pink trim, anyway? :) Look it up!

All Things Tea

New on the north side of Bloor Street between Albany and Howland is the tea room, All Things Tea. They carry loose teas, tea accessories and tea to go. There is a small area with tables for sitting and it looks like they will eventually carry pastries and the sort. They've been open since the end of June and are encouraged by the initial reception saying it is especially busy in the evenings.

The Bloor Cinema has a raft of classic summer movies lined up this week, including E.T.: The Extraterrestrial; Bladerunner, The Final Cut; Independence Day and Jurassic Park. (Do I really need outgoing links to explain those movies?)

It's PS Mirvish Village this Sunday, meaning Markham Street just south of Bloor will be closed to cars and open to pedestrians (PS = Pedestrian Sunday.) July 13th's PS will emphasize the history of Mirvish Village and anniversaries of several local businesses will be celebrated.

The Palmerston Library is offering a comic book workshop for kids age nine and older on Wednesday, July 16 at 10:30 am. Register in person, or by calling 416.393.7680.

Just down the road on the same day -- July 16 -- children age two to six and their caregivers can enjoy Family Storytime Silly Stories For Children at 10:30 a.m. at the Spadina Road library.

The Annex Wreck Room at the corner of Bathurst and Bloor hosts the Toronto Independent Music Award Showcase tonight at 8 pm. The cost is $7.

Although the Tranzac is the HQ for The Fringe Festival, you still can catch some music there, including Torontonian Ronley Teper Tuesday at 10 pm.

I BLOGged about The Fringe Festival separately, but it's still on till the 13th. Local venues include Royal St. George's and the Miles Nadal JCC.

Sometimes it amazes me that you can live in an area for a decade and continually discover new treasures. Keeps things fresh!

I met a pal for lunch a week ago and his only prerequisite, given the stunning weather, was that we eat on a patio.

A quick 'net search for "best patios" turned up The Bedford Academy at 36 Prince Arthur Avenue. It really does have a fabulous patio and, given that it's the former site of the Toronto Ladies' Club, the interior ain't too shabby, either!

I liked the eclectic menu. It strives to be a "a pub, a bistro and a bar" and seems to be meeting its goal.

File this one under "websites we love"... my sister recently discovered the TED website and reminded me about it. You really have to surf the site to "get" it, but here's a synopsis from the website:

"TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.
The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).
This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. More than 200 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week."

It's mandate?
"Spreading ideas. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other."

Be warned, though: a quick surf can turn into an hours-long exploration for those with 'curious souls.' Best to visit on a rainy day...

Randolph Academy Shows

On our doorstep lies the Randolph Academy, which is housed in a former church on Bathurst, south of Bloor. Its "triple threat" program teaches acting, singing and dance to its students. Several times a year, the academy mounts productions in its Annex Theatre and you can catch them for $22.

Plaque To Commemorate Riot At Christie Pits

I've BLOGged before about Christie Pits park and its history, including the race riot of 1933.
They say that to ignore history is to risk repeating it and, probably with that in mind, the city is going to put a plaque in the park to commemorate the riots.
It will be unveiled on August 17 at 11 am. Jocko Thomas will be on hand, as will Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone and Cyril Levitt, author of The Riot at Christie Pits.

As a reminder, there's an Environment Day in our area Saturday.

For more fun pursuits, you might want to hoof it up to Casa Loma for this weekend's Renaissance Festival.
"Casa Loma's estate gardens will be transformed into a Renaissance-style village populated by vendors, village characters and the court of King Henry VIII."
Acts include comedians Men In Tights (extra $2); Sir Charles of Linton, with his bird of prey; and Zoltan the Adequate, geek magician.

The Fringe, Toronto's Theatre Festival, is on till the 13th, as I already BLOGgeda about, and one of the sites in the MilesNadalJCC at Bloor and Spadina.
That's also the site for the third Annual IsReal Dance Festival July 3 to 5, which aims to "share the joy and fun of Israeli folk dancing, in celebration this year of Israel @ 60."

And on Sunday, you can mosey over to the MNjcc to hear author Brandon Marlon reading The Bleeding Season, which took top honours at the Canadian Jewish playwrighting competition.
"This play explores the physical and psychological effects of the suicide terrorists on both Israelis and Palestinians."

Remember Lukas Rossi, he of the heavy eyeliner and skunk-stripe hair? Who won Rockstar Supernova, the reality show quest for a singer to front a band made up of former members of various famous bands?
Well, if you do, you might be happy to know that he is in town with his band to play Lee's Palace Wednesday. (Yep, in a real shocker, the Supernova band didn't last....) Tickets are $15.

On Saturday, The Annex Wreck Room at Bathurst and Bloor is the venue for a Beck CD Release Listening Party. Not due to be released until July 8th, Beck's latest is called Modern Guilt.

The Toronto Photography Marathon kicks off in Christie Pits park Saturday at 10:30 am. Participants get a 12-exposure roll of film and 12 themes that must be photographed in sequence during a 24-hour period. It ends at noon on Sunday back at the park and the pics will be exhibited July 19 at the Gladstone, with voting on the best photo in each theme. It costs $45 to participate and you need to bring your own non-digital camera.

There's a new comedy undertaking in the 'hood... Brainstorm Lounge Comedy Show offers live comedians and short films with host "That Canadian Guy" Glen Foster every Monday starting at 8 p.m. on the second floor at 296 Brunswick Ave., which is just south of Bloor.

Southern Accent

Want a little taste of N'ahluns without having to break the bank? Don't forget about Southern Accent, which lies on our doorstep in Mirvish Village on Markham Street.

Some family members were there for dinner awhile ago and mentioned that the psychics were in attendance, giving readings. Wha...? But then it sounded like a kinda fun, "night out" thing to do. Apparently, they're popular, so you might want to book in advance.

As for the food, I'm not a HUGE southern food fan, but people who are rave about dishes like hush puppies, blackened chicken livers, Dauphine Street Cracker Catfish and Canal Street Creole Jambalaya.
As well, there's enough choice so that most people could find something delish and they have great prix fixe deals, plus they're participating in Summerlicious. For the latter occasion, you can get a $25, three-course meal with entree choices that include BBQ Pork Sideribs and Shrimp, Andouille sausage and corn skewers with grainy mustard aioli.

Community Environment Day July 5 at Central Tech

Happy Canada Day!

Wisely, the city hosts Environment Days in different communities throughout the summer. Ours will be this Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm at Central Tech (Harbord and Borden entrance.)

Have surplus art supplies, children's book, CDs and cases? Drop them off and they'll be sent to ArtsJunktion, a storehouse for art supplies set up by the Toronto District School Board.

Saturday's also the time to drop off old paint tins, plastic shopping bags, inkjet and laser printer cartridges and much, much more. You'll find a complete list by clicking on the link above.

As well, if your green bin has disappeared, or you need a backyard composter or a rain barrel, this is the place to buy them.

Fringe Festival

Wednesday will mark the beginning of the 20th anniversary of The Fringe, Toronto's Theatre Festival, and many of the venues are in -- or bordering on -- our area.
You can catch "Unjuried! Unexpected! Unforgettable!" plays until July 13 at local venues such as the Palmerston Library Theatre and The Tarragon Theatre at 30 Bridgman Avenue.
It's hard to pick just one or two plays to highlight from the jam-packed schedule, so surf it yourself and find what tickles your fancy.
